1. Paying the charge
You need to pay the Dartford Crossing charge (Dart Charge) by midnight the day after you cross.
If you do not pay the Dart Charge on time you might get a fine.
Use this service to:
- pay the Dart Charge
- set up a Dart Charge account
- pay or challenge a fine (also called a ‘Penalty Charge Notice’ or PCN)
- check which crossings you’ve paid for
You need your:
- vehicle registration number (number plate)
- PCN reference number if you’re paying or challenging a fine
If you’ve already set up an account, to manage your account or pay the charge.
Who needs to pay the charge
You usually need to pay the charge if you use the Dartford Crossing between 6am and 10pm - including at weekends and on bank holidays.
You do not need to pay if you:
- cross on a motorcycle, moped or quad bike
- get free UK vehicle tax because of a disability (your vehicle will be checked automatically when you cross)

How to pay
There are 3 ways you can pay.
One-off payment
Pay by midnight the day after you cross. You can also pay for future crossings.
You do not need to set up a Dart Charge account.
Pay as you go
Set up a Dart Charge account and add a payment card to it.
Payment will automatically be taken from your card at midnight the day after you cross.
Pre-pay
Set up a Dart Charge account and add money to it.
When you cross, payment will automatically be taken from the money you have available in your Dart Charge account.
If you have a pre-pay account, you will get a discount of up to 20%.
If you want to change whether your account is pre-pay or pay as you go, you will need to close your account and open a new one.
Other ways to pay
You can:
- pay with cash at a Payzone store -
- set up an account by post
- pay in advance or top-up your account by post
- pay a fine (or PCN) by phone
- pay or set up an account by phoning the Dart Charge contact centre

2. Charges
You must pay the charge if you use the Dartford Crossing between 6am and 10pm. Charges apply every day - including weekends and bank holidays.
How much you pay to cross depends on the type of vehicle you’re driving and whether you:
- make a one-off payment without an account
- have a pay as you go account
- have a pre-pay account

Count droppable axles whether they’re up or down. Only count trailer axles for articulated vehicles.
If you’re disabled
You do not need to pay the charge if you get free UK vehicle tax because of a disability.
Your vehicle will be checked automatically when you cross - you do not need to do anything.

Local resident discount
You can apply for a discount if you live in the council boundaries of Dartford or Thurrock. You can find out which is your local council.
You can pay an annual fee of either:

£20 a year to use the Dartford Crossing as many times as you want

£10 a year for 50 crossings
If you’re on the £10 plan and you run out of crossings you can either pay:

£5 for 25 additional crossings

£10 to upgrade to the £20 plan and get unlimited crossings
The total amount you pay in a year will not be more than £20.
If you do not pay the annual fee, the local resident discount will be removed from your account. You’ll have to pay the one-off charge. You’ll need to reapply for the discount.
Apply for the local resident discount
You need to set up an account to get the discount and pay for crossings in advance.
You’ll need to provide a copy of your vehicle log book (V5C) and any 2 of the following documents to prove where you live:
- a recent bank or credit card statement
- a recent gas, electricity or water bill
- your most recent council tax bill
- Universal Credit, tenancy agreement or housing association document
- your driving licence (photo card only)
You must provide your documents every 2 years to confirm your details are up to date.
If your vehicle registration number (number plate) changes
Update your account with the new vehicle registration number and send your V5C through the or by post to:

You will lose the local resident discount if you don’t send your V5C within 6 weeks of updating your account. You’ll have to pay the one-off charge.
3. Fines (Penalty Charge Notices)
You can get a £70 fine if you do not pay the Dart Charge.
You must pay the fine within 28 days of receiving a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
The fine will be:
- reduced to £35 if you pay within 14 days
- increased to £105 if you do not pay it
This is in addition to paying the original crossing charge.
Pay or challenge the fine online
You need:
- your vehicle registration number (number plate)
- your PCN reference number
- evidence to show why your PCN was issued incorrectly (if you’re challenging the PCN)

Pay for a PCN by phoning the PCN contact centre.
